[ Like most, Ami arrives confused and afraid. As soothing as Idris Elba's deep British voiceover is, the video still raises at least as many questions as it answers. First off, why is it Idris Elba? And if the very first room is in disrepair - there's exactly one living plant, incongruously - how much of the rest was false advertising, too?

The simplest and safest first step, though, is to grab a communicator and start skimming through the messages. One is like three hours long, she skips that for now... something something wreckage... something something antique documents... (Where are the timestamps? How old are these messages?) Ultimately, though, an audio post keeps her attention - a woman, terrified, being pursued by something inhuman.

By the time the sound cuts out, Ami's heart is racing. Suddenly, she's very glad she didn't go straight to exploring. ]

Hadriel. I was there for about a year. It was a city ruled by these uh... beings that like, fed off our emotions and stuff? Also there were killer robots. It was super weird.

[And super horrible. This place is actually really chill in comparison.]

[ peter are you one of those "you could get us killed, or worse, expelled" types. is this what she's gonna have to deal with. ]

It sounds weird. [ Frankly, Ami has a hard time picturing it. How would that even work? Magic? Is magic a thing now too? She has so many questions, and yet...

... maybe she shouldn't pry. ]

And then one day you were just here instead?

[In some ways that his him exactly but in some ways he is so not even close to that. it's complicated]

Well. Kind of. See, we'd figured out how to go home. There was a... a magic door that we had to fix, and we did, so. So we all started going home. Except instead of that, a few of us ended up here. I don't know if the door just sent us to the wrong place, or if the portal here somehow like, intercepted us mid-teleportation or whatever, but. I mean, it is what it is, I guess.

[SHRUG, what can you do? Destiny gonna do what destiny gonna do.]

[ Her face falls. ] Oh, no... that really is the worst.

[ You're trapped in an alternate dimension. You figure out how to escape, how to go home. You get your hopes up. You say your goodbyes. You're all set to see your family and friends again ...

... only for the rug to get yanked out from under you. The whole process starts over again, rinse and repeat. Jesus, that's the most demoralizing thing she can imagine. ]

[Now, as far as Peter knows, he wouldn't have been able to go home anyway. He can deal with this. Everyone else that had tried to go home that had ended up here, though, he feels super bad for. Because this is some bullshit.]

Yeah, it's... not really ideal. But hey. Could always be worse.

[Nothing he can do about it but shrug. So he does.]

[ Noooo Peter you just jinxed it!!! He's not wrong, though, Ami can certainly imagine a lot of ways this could be worse. She also gets the feeling that voicing those many, many ways would not be helpful. So instead, she just echoes his shrug. ]

Sometimes the best you can do is keep a positive attitude, huh?

[How many times has he said almost those exact words to people?? God, so many times. Just. SO many.]

Yeah, that's uh. Kind of what I've been shooting for. It seems to sort of help the like, general morale of the people I'm around, so I must be doing something right.

[ Ami nods, managing a smile. It's gotta be incredibly difficult, cheering everybody else up after you've been through a lot yourself. Maybe she can't personally relate ~~yet~~, but she can see how that could get heavy. ]

It's an important job! And in my opinion, you're doing great.

[ She gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder. I mean, he dropped whatever he was doing to come and help her through this frightening experience, and so far she's been able to avoid a complete mental breakdown, so... good work!

Anyway, this seems like a good time to talk about something else. Like, uh... the view from this particular walkway, now that they've moved to a spot where it's easier to see. Ami takes a few steps in that direction, though she's careful not to get too close to the edge. ]

Is this the, uh... [ she snaps her fingers a few times. ] The open part. The hole. Atrium! That's it.

[It's all good man, Peter's really good at lifting heavy stuff. Figuratively and literally. The reassurance that he's doing good at being the... local like, morale guy, is definitely helping.

He nods in reply to that, but he's also more than happy to change the subject. With seemingly far less caution than Ami, Peter strolls right up to the edge of the walkway to look down.]

I dunno, I like just "the hole" better. It's fitting, y'know?

[ Ami tenses the closer he gets to the edge. WHY ARE BOYS LIKE THIS. She laughs, but it sounds a bit frantic. ]

Don't fall in...!

[He could be a total douche and pretend like he's about to fall in, but he's not a total douche. AND SO, he'll take a step back from the edge instead and give her an apologetic grin]

Sorry, habit. Speaking of horrible accidents, though, the Medbay is down on that lowest level there.

...That was a terrible segue, but I guess it's good information to have?

[ "Habit" he says! Geez. There's enough stuff here that wants to kill you as it is, no need to add gravity to the list. But, sigh of relief, anyway. ]

Heh... yeah, at least once they peel you off the pavement, you don't have far to go.

[ Okay maybe that was a little dark, but. Medbay, way down there, good to know. She steps a little closer to look down, although still a couple yards back from the edge. ]

Sheesh. All this sci-fi stuff, you'd think they could at least figure out guard rails.

[PSH, gravity. Gravity's got nothing on Peter.]

Gross. But true. And you've got... kind of a great point, there. This place is one gigantic OSHA violation, I'm definitely putting "guard rails" on my to-do list. I mean, so far we haven't had any accidents? But you never know when that's gonna change.

Yeah... although I guess that's probably a "B" priority, huh? Behind food and water and oxygen and radiation and so on. You could rack up a heck of a to-do list around here without even trying, it sounds like.

[WHERE'S THE LIE]

Ooooh yeah. After my first two hours here, I had a list of like twenty things to do. I mean, not all of them were like super urgent, but there's just... never a dull moment, y'know?

I bet. [ She starts making her way back to the walkway to signal she's ready to keep moving. ]

Is there, like... anything I might be able to help with?

[ But she sounds less and less confident the closer she gets to the question mark. Can she help? It's not like she knows anything about food production or nuclear engineering... or even where the bathrooms are, for that matter. Yeah, she'll be a huge help. ]

[Time to stop standing at the edge of the walkway like a weirdo. He follows her back and off they gooo]

Oh, yeah. I'm sure we can find plenty of things for you to help with. There's a lot of people around who can show you how to do stuff, too, like, we can totally figure something out for you.

[SHE'LL BE A HUGE HELP IT'S FIIIINE]

Okay, cool! Cool.

[ She's still not totally convinced she'll be much use, but hey, Peter's the one with the to-do list. Even if it's just washing dishes, she'll trust he can find something. ]

What have you been working on mostly? Like, you personally, I mean. [ Partly fishing for ideas, but partly she's just curious about him. ]

[There IS a lot of shit that needs to be cleaned up, this place is a friggen mess]

Oh man, uh. Little bit of everything, really. First I was working on getting power restored to some areas of the station, then I had to make sure the air filtration systems were working properly. There were some broken radiation sensors outside that of friend and I fixed, then I had to hook some generators up. This ones kind of a personal project, but I took over some lab space in R&D to work on stuff, and when I have free time I've been trying to uh, teach people how to work some of the weird tech around here.

[ tl;dr peter never sleeps because if he sleeps something might break and then they'll all DIE. i mean that won't happen but he's developed some not great habits lately.]

[ You're in luck, now that there's a Maid on the team! ... She's not that kind of Maid.

Ami's jaw slowly drops as the list just... doesn't stop from getting longer. That is a lot??? And it's all stuff she wouldn't even know where to begin with. ]

... And you said you're a junior? Like, in high school?

Yeah. Well, I would have been this year.

[He shrugs like, this ain't even weird to him anymore. He sees a job that needs done, and he does it. He's gotten way too used to this no-chill life.]

[ It's baffling that he sounds so casual about it. From her perspective, that's far from normal. High school boys play sports and watch movies and go to the mall and stuff, they don't have labs. That's more like one of those 90s "boy genius" cartoons. ]

It sounds like you ought to be in college!

[It is 100% abnormal, but abnormal has been Peter's normal for a while now. Life is super weird that way.]

Y'know, maybe. I probably could have tested out or something, but then all this... gettin' teleported around to weird planets stuff happened.

[And the dying stuff, but he's not gonna dump that baggage on a kid.
