Hard to say, I'm trying to figure it out. Way back when, it had to be human meat and it had to be my kill. I think it had to do with the idea of a soul, of the hunt and the sacrafice of it all. But since I haven't been in the Fog God's grasp, it's dulled, it doesn't seem to be human anymore, but... killing something is required before it stops.
